Martin originally set up the company over 10 years ago, to offer Yacht Technical Support. It is only in the last 12 months that Martin has finally been able to make Vortex Marine his full time role.

Martin is a marine engineer with over 30 years experience in the Merchant Navy and yachting sectors.

Having started his cadetship in September 1989, he then worked his way up the ranks on a variety of commercial vessels before moving into the yachting sector in February 2007. He moved ashore in 2020 as a Yacht Superintendent, before finally taking up his current role as a independent Marine Surveyor and BSS Examiner in 2022.

Martin has worked on several new build yacht projects, ranging from 70m up to +150m, covering various aspects of the builds, including steel and welding inspections, FAT’s of equipment, plan approvals, overseeing day to day construction up to the final sea trials and delivery.

The most recent new build project was the 136m Charter yacht Flying Fox. This project was overseen from prior to commencement of steel cutting all the way through to delivery and warranty and then beyond.

Delivering this vessel to the owners in March 2019, he then remained onboard as the Chief Engineer, before finally moving ashore to become the Vessel Superintendent at the start of 2020.

Martin is now self employed, covering the inland waterways for BSS Examinations, Hull Surveys, Pre Purchase Surveys and is also still involved in Yacht Technical Management.

Martin holds the following accreditations and memberships with professional bodies; - IEng IMarEng MIMarEST MIET MCMS and he also holds a MCA Class 1 Motor Certificate of Competency.

Martin is a qualified Boat Safety Scheme Examiner for Leisure boats and Hire Boats.

Martin is also involved with the local Sea Cadet Corp unit and currently working towards being a Petty Officer. He has gained his RYA Powerboat Instructors qualification, and working towards obtaining his Inland Waterways Helm Instructor.

Martin has had a passion for the UK canals for many years, he finally made the move to being a liveaboard. This was on a 65ft x 10ft wide beam which was designed and built to Martin’s own specifications.

Currently Martin owns a 2008 Coulter built boat with a 1948 Kelvin K3 Engine installed. Since purchasing this A picture containing indoorDescription automatically generated narrowboat, Martin and his wife ,Joanne, have spent a significant amount of time updated and modernising the systems onboard, Barbarian has also undergone a full bare metal repaint in 2020.

Barbarian is currently for sale and listed on Apollo Duck, this is to make way for a new boat.
